A guide to surviving a family road trip these holidays

The Christmas holiday period is usually the busiest time of year for travel as we make our way around the country to be with loved ones. If you’re avoiding a hectic airport or need to ferry a lot of gifts and luggage around, you’ll be making the journey by car, which means packing the family up and setting off.

But a family road trip can quickly turn chaotic without proper planning and preparation. From ensuring the kids stay entertained to keeping the car running smoothly, here are some essential tips for a smooth and safe road trip these holidays.

Plan your journey

Spontaneity might sound appealing, but with a family in tow, a well-thought-out plan is your best friend. Plot your route in advance, marking rest stops and playgrounds along the way so you can stop for bathroom breaks and fuel, especially if you’ll be passing through some isolated areas. It’ll also pay to check for any holiday road closures on your route so you don’t get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the summer heat.

Check your vehicle

Before hitting the road, ensure that your vehicle is in top-notch condition. Check tyre pressure, oil levels, and fuel to avoid unexpected breakdowns. Safety is paramount, so make sure that any car seats are securely installed and use shade accessories to shield little ones from the sun's glare. It’s also a good idea to keep emergency supplies handy, including a first aid kit, blankets, and extra essentials, just in case.

Pack efficiently

The way you pack your car can make or break a road trip. Keep frequently needed items like snacks, wipes, and water bottles within easy reach so you can avoid the hassle of rummaging through your luggage en route. Make sure everything in your car is loaded safely too—it’s easy to throw everything together haphazardly in your rush to get going, but make sure that nothing is going to fly around and cause injuries if you need to brake suddenly.

Keep the kids entertained

Bored children can swiftly turn a relaxing drive into a chorus of "Are we there yet?" Combat restlessness with a selection of engaging games and activities. Classic travel games like 'I Spy' or scavenger hunts are timeless and require minimal planning. It’s essential to have a mix of entertainment options available if possible—no one wants to guess C is for cow seven times in a row! From electronic games and movies to captivating books, keep an entertainment arsenal on hand to keep everyone happy.

Expect the unexpected

One of the best things you can do on a holiday road trip is be flexible. You can plan as much as you like, but there will always be some things that are out of your control. If you embark on your journey with the expectation that things might not go as planned, you’ll be more likely to be able to resolve any problems calmly and quickly. Try to stay calm and keep stress levels to a minimum; it is a busy time of year, but we all know how rapidly frustration and anger can spread, particularly in an enclosed space!

Wherever the holidays take you this year, we wish you all safe and happy travels!
